FAQs
I've never climbed before! Can I still join CRCC?
Yes! We welcome climbers of any level. Club Nights especially are great if it is your first time, but you can definitely come to any practice or event regardless of skill!
Where does the club climb?
Primarily at Lindseth Climbing Center in Bartels Hall on Cornell's Central Campus. We also go on trips to other gyms like Cayuga Climbs or outdoor locations.
Do I have to pay?
In general, you'll need a pass or membership to climb at Lindseth. However, if it is your first time at the wall, Lindseth has an $8 deal for a day pass, including shoe and harness rentals.
We don't want finance to be a barrier, so check out Cornell's Access Fund or contact us if you need any assistance for passes/membership!
What should I know for my first time climbing at Lindseth?
Wear clothes you feel comfortable exercising in. You'll need to sign a waiver -- you can do this in advance or at the wall. You'll need to wear climbing shoes, which you can rent from the wall. You can also rent chalk (good for sweaty hands) and harnesses (for climbing on ropes).
There are three sorts of climbing you can do on your first day: bouldering (no rope or certification required), auto belay (you'll need to ask wall staff for certification), or top rope (you'll need someone to belay you). Oh and it'll be fun! The wall is a great place to meet new people.
How do I learn how to Belay?
The easiest way we recommend is taking the wall’s Learn to Belay clinic which is $25. You can enroll in this whenever, just shoot an email to Josh Giblin (jbg286@cornell.edu) if you are interested.
You can also enroll in COE’s Beginner Rock Climber class, but this is a semester-long course so it is too late to join this semester.
